US House Votes to Rein In Trump on Iran

The US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a war powers resolution by a vote of 214–208, directing President Donald Trump to halt military action against Iran unless authorized by Congress. The measure, introduced by Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, was backed by most Democrats and four Republicans: Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson and Thomas Massie.

The resolution is largely symbolic, as similar measures have failed to bring an end to hostilities in the past.

The vote came as fighting in the Middle East intensified, with the US military launching another wave of airstrikes against Iran and Tehran retaliating by attacking US bases in neighboring countries.

Trump promised “major military punishment” for both Iran and the Yemeni Houthis following attacks on Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Red Sea. The US Senate was later due to vote on a separate but similar resolution.
