EU Extends Voluntary Message-Scanning Rules

The European Union (EU) has approved a temporary legal regime allowing messaging platforms and online services to continue voluntarily detecting and reporting child sexual abuse material until 3 April 2028, according to Euronews.

At the European Parliament's insistence, the legislation excludes end-to-end encrypted messages on services such as WhatsApp and Signal.

The measure, which temporarily exempts providers from standard EU privacy rules, has drawn criticism from human rights groups and some members of the European Parliament, who say it sets a precedent for interference in private correspondence.

The previous rules expired this spring, but the European People's Party pushed to revive them with the backing of the European Commission. The EU is working on permanent legislation, though critics argue that broad scanning of private messages would undermine the right to confidential communications.
