Philippines Condemns China's Actions at Scarborough Shoal

The Philippine Coast Guard on Friday accused its Chinese counterpart of using water cannons against government vessels near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea for the second consecutive day.

Manila said it was the third confrontation between the two countries this week.

The Philippine Coast Guard said a Chinese vessel came within about seven meters of a Philippine fishing boat, creating a serious risk of collision.

Spokesperson Jay Tarriela described Beijing's actions as dangerous and unprofessional, adding that Scarborough Shoal is a traditional fishing ground for Filipino fishermen.

China said the Philippine vessels were operating illegally in the area and had ignored repeated orders to leave. Beijing said its coast guard had therefore taken "control measures", including blocking the vessels and using water cannons.

China's Foreign Ministry described the operation as appropriate, lawful and flawless.

The latest incident followed a confrontation on Monday at Second Thomas Shoal, during which Manila said a Filipino sailor was injured.

The dispute persists despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that largely favored the Philippines and found that China's blockade of Scarborough Shoal violated international law. Beijing rejects the ruling.
