Four Mathematicians Awarded Prestigious Fields Medal

One of the world's most prestigious mathematics awards, the Fields Medal, was awarded this year to four mathematicians, including Hong Wang, the first Chinese woman and only the third woman overall to receive the award, according to the NZZ website.

Wang won recognition for her proof of the long-standing three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, which spans several branches of mathematics. Despite a series of major awards, she says she still doubts her own abilities.

The other recipients are Yu Deng for his contribution to the solution of Hilbert’s sixth problem, John Pardon for his work in symplectic geometry and topology, and Jacob Tsimerman, who uses artificial intelligence tools in his research to navigate the scientific literature.

The International Mathematical Union awards the Fields Medal in recognition of outstanding mathematical achievement, regardless of nationality.
