Greece Downs Two Missiles over Saudi Arabia
The Greek Patriot air defense system deployed in Saudi Arabia shot down two ballistic missiles on Saturday that had been launched from Yemen toward oil refineries in the city of Yanbu. Greek security sources confirmed this to Reuters.
Saudi Civil Defense had previously issued an emergency warning to residents about the impending attack. According to the sources, both missiles were launched from Yemeni territory and were targeting energy facilities in Yanbu.
Greece has been operating the US-made Patriot system in Saudi Arabia since 2021 under an agreement to protect the kingdom's strategic energy infrastructure.
Saturday's intervention was only the second time Greek personnel have deployed the system in combat.
