Trump Extends Tariffs to Australia

Australia plans to continue exerting diplomatic pressure on the United States after President Donald Trump's administration imposed new tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, including Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would raise the issue of tariffs with Trump at all levels of bilateral relations and described them as unjustified.

Washington justifies the new measures by claiming that the affected countries have not sufficiently curbed trade in goods produced by forced labor.

Australia rejects these claims and points out that it is among the countries with strict rules against modern slavery, which it enforces through supply chain monitoring and heavy penalties for violations.

Under the new measures, Australian imports into the US are subject to a 12.5% tariff. Canberra continues to advocate for free and fair trade and is seeking the repeal of the new tariffs.
