Brazil Warns Trump Tariffs Will Raise Prices

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the new US tariffs on Brazilian imports unfair and strategically misguided. In a commentary for The Washington Post, he noted that despite multiple rounds of negotiations between the two countries and his personal presentation of arguments to President Donald Trump, Washington imposed tariffs ranging from 12.5%–37.5%.

According to Lula da Silva, this move will raise prices on a range of products, including food, footwear, textiles, furniture and auto parts, for American consumers, and will weaken trade relations between the two countries. The president also noted that the United States has maintained a trade surplus with Brazil for the past 15 years.

He also cited data from Global Trade Alert, according to which Brazil is among the countries subject to the highest US tariffs. Lula further emphasized that Brazil remains open to dialogue but wants to decide its own future without foreign interference.
