Police Kill Berlin Pride Attack Suspect

German police shot and killed a 21-year-old man on Sunday who was suspected of Saturday's attack on participants in the Pride parade in Berlin. According to a police statement, he was tracked down in an allotment garden complex in the Spandau district, where he reportedly charged at responding officers armed with a bladed weapon.

He died at the scene despite attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him. In Saturday's attack in the Tiergarten, a minivan plowed into a crowd near the Brandenburg Gate during Christopher Street Day celebrations, killing one person and injuring 29 others.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said all available evidence so far points to an Islamist motive. According to him, the suspect was a German citizen of Lebanese origin who was already known to security agencies for radicalization and ties to the Islamist scene.

Following the tragedy, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Germany would continue to protect freedom, openness and the liberal values of society.
