Pope Leo Urges Caution Over Social Media and AI

Pope Leo XIV has urged young people to take a restrained and disciplined approach to social media and artificial intelligence.

In a video message to a Christian youth festival in Brazil, he encouraged them to use these technologies with moderation and discipline. He warned that they could draw people into an unreal world in which fleeting trends, appearances and deception replace true values and what really matters.

The US-born pope is currently staying at his residence in Castel Gandolfo, just outside Rome.

In May, he published his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas (Great Humanity), a document of more than 100 pages devoted to artificial intelligence. It calls for strict guidelines governing the development and use of AI.

At the same time, the Pope acknowledged that the technology offers significant opportunities when used responsibly and in ways that serve humanity.
