Paris Stabbing Suspect Moved to Psychiatric Ward

The man who stabbed three women in Paris's 17th arrondissement on Monday was released from police custody on Tuesday and transferred to a psychiatric ward. The Paris prosecutor's office made the decision after an evaluation found that his mental condition was incompatible with detention.

The prosecutor's office also confirmed that the suspect had been receiving psychiatric treatment before the attack. Following the incident in the Porte de Clichy area in northwestern Paris, he was detained by an off-duty police officer. According to witnesses, the man was speaking incoherently.

The prosecutor's office said the investigation found that, although the suspect was under psychiatric supervision, he had not previously come to the attention of the police or judicial authorities.

Two women suffered serious injuries in the attack, but their conditions have since stabilized. A third victim, who is eight months pregnant, was also hospitalized but is not in life-threatening condition.
