US Prosecutors Say Political Ideology Motivated Kirk Killing

US prosecutors say Tyler Robinson targeted conservative activist Charlie Kirk because of his political and religious beliefs, according to court filings presented during a preliminary hearing.

Kirk, a co-founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot on 10 September 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. Robinson, 23, is charged with aggravated murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.

According to prosecutors, Robinson opposed Kirk's public positions on issues including same-sex marriage and transgender rights. They argue that those views conflicted with Robinson's own beliefs and helped motivate the attack.

Among the evidence presented were text messages in which Robinson allegedly wrote that he had "had enough of Kirk's hatred". Prosecutors also pointed to inscriptions found on ammunition recovered during the investigation, including the phrase "Hey fascist! Catch!" engraved on an unfired cartridge.

Defense attorneys dispute the prosecution's interpretation of the evidence, arguing that the messages and forensic evidence do not conclusively establish Robinson's state of mind or prove the alleged motive. They have also challenged aspects of the DNA and ballistics evidence presented during the hearing.

Judge Tony Graf is scheduled to hear final arguments on 1 September before deciding whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Robinson has not yet entered a plea.
