Putin Accepts Udmurtia Leader's Resignation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted the resignation of Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurt Republic, according to The Moscow Times. Brechalov led the region in the western Urals for nine years and, according to the regional government, is leaving to take up a new position.

Olga Abramova, a native of Udmurtia and former local minister of agriculture and advisor to the Russian minister, has become acting governor until elections next year.

During the meeting, Putin highlighted her local roots and emphasized the importance of the defense industry for the region. The Udmurt capital, Izhevsk, is home to major arms manufacturers, including the Kalashnikov Concern, which produces assault rifles, drones and guided missiles.

Political analysts point out that Brechalov has recently faced criticism for poor performance, administrative disputes and the arrest of local elites. In the 2022 elections, he secured the narrowest victory of any incumbent governor.
