Germany’s Public Debt Rises to €2.66tn

Germany’s public debt rose to about €2.66tn ($3.03tn) at the end of 2025, according to final figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

That amounted to €31,887 ($36,287) per person, up €1,821 ($2,072) from the previous year.

Total liabilities increased by 6%, or €151.4bn ($172.3bn). The figures cover borrowing by the federal government, the states, municipalities, municipal associations and the social security system on private capital markets.

Federal debt accounted for the largest share, rising by 6.2%, or €107.7bn ($122.6bn), to about €1.84tn ($2.09tn). Liabilities held by the states grew by 2.9% to €624.9bn ($711.1bn).

Municipalities and their associations recorded the sharpest increase, with their debt climbing by 15.4% to €197bn ($224.2bn).

By contrast, social security liabilities remained negligible at €0.16 ($0.18) per person, down from €0.19 ($0.22) the previous year.
