Meloni Threatens to Suspend Schengen with Spain

In response to the unprecedented influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that Italy would not stand idly by and watch the situation unfold. She also threatened to suspend the Schengen Agreement with Spain.

Meloni made the remarks after social media was flooded with footage of thousands of migrants entering Ceuta. According to Spanish public broadcaster TVE, approximately 2,000 to 3,000 people crossed the border.

"The images coming from Ceuta are striking and demonstrate, once again, that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a concrete threat to the security of Europe's borders", said the Italian prime minister.

Her statement came amid a migration crisis that has hit the Spanish enclave in North Africa and raised concerns about the protection of the European Union's external borders.

At the same time, claims appeared on the social media platform X that Sweden and Finland had joined Italy in calling for the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with regard to Spain. This information has not yet been independently confirmed, however.
