Rheinmetall Wins US Army Autonomous Vehicle Contract

American Rheinmetall has been awarded an 18-month contract for the US Army’s Project Sustainment program, carried out through the National Advanced Mobility Consortium (NAMC).

As prime contractor, the company will develop next-generation autonomous, hybrid-powered uncrewed ground vehicles designed to strengthen tactical logistics operations and support the Army’s wider modernization objectives.

The vehicles will transport supplies autonomously to and from the forward line of troops during company-level sustainment missions. The aim is to reduce risks to soldiers and improve operational efficiency in contested environments.

The program focuses on advances in autonomy, commerciality and hybrid power integration. It will also incorporate voice control to improve interaction between soldiers and the vehicles. Development and testing will take place at facilities and test ranges across the United States.

American Rheinmetall is working with Harbinger, Forterra and Primordial Labs. Harbinger will contribute commercial vehicle technology and production expertise, Forterra will provide autonomous systems and Primordial Labs will supply its Anura human-machine interface, which allows vehicles to be controlled through natural-language commands.

The contract includes the possibility of follow-on orders as the US Army continues to modernize its autonomous logistics fleet.
