UK Signals Tougher AI Oversight If Needed

The UK is prepared to regulate the most advanced artificial intelligence systems if voluntary safety measures prove insufficient, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said. He stressed that the government's priority is to protect the public while avoiding unnecessary restrictions on a sector it considers vital to economic growth.

For now, the UK is relying on voluntary cooperation with technology companies and the work of the AI Security Institute, which evaluates advanced models from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google before their release.

The debate over stricter oversight has intensified following reports of problematic behavior by some experimental AI models. However, the UK continues to take a different approach from the European Union, which has begun implementing its Artificial Intelligence Act. Instead of creating a dedicated AI regulator, Britain relies on existing regulators to enforce rules in their respective sectors
