Afghan Man Sentenced to Life for Munich Car Attack

A German court sentenced a 25-year-old Afghan man to life in prison on Thursday for a car attack on a labor union demonstration in Munich that killed two people and injured more than 40 others in February 2025. Among the victims were a 37-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter.

The court characterized the crime as particularly serious, a designation that under German law generally rules out parole after 15 years.

The man was found guilty of two counts of murder and 23 counts of attempted murder. Prosecutors stated that he acted out of religious motives, viewing the attack as a response to the suffering of Muslims in predominantly Islamic countries.

The defendant confessed to the crime shortly after committing it. The sentence is among the harshest the German justice system can impose for such an offense.
