St. Boniface LGBT Posters Anger German Catholics

An advertising campaign for LGBT Christopher Street Day celebrations due to take place in Fulda, Germany, in late August has prompted protests from Catholics, according to the Catholic website InfoCatólica.

Organizers used a photograph of the city’s well-known statue of St. Boniface, the patron saint of the Diocese of Fulda, alongside slogans suggesting that the saint would “rave” with participants or “dress as a woman”.

Several Catholics have objected to the use of the saint’s image, although the Diocese of Fulda has not officially protested. The promotional materials also feature the logo of the German federal program Demokratie leben! (“Live Democracy!”).

Boniface has deep historical ties to Fulda. He founded an abbey there in the 8th century, is the patron saint of the diocese and is buried in the city’s cathedral.
