EU Criticizes Social Media over Ceuta Crisis

European Commissioner for Digital and Frontier Technologies Henna Virkkunen criticized Meta and TikTok for their handling of disinformation during the recent migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. At the same time, she called for significantly stricter monitoring of social media platforms during emergencies and crises, according to the DPA news agency.

At the end of last month, tens of thousands of people crossed the border from Morocco into Ceuta, causing serious problems in this small territory and sparking a political dispute over the protection of the European Union's external borders. Social media played a crucial role in this massive migration. Many migrants confirmed that they were led to make this journey by videos and posts on platforms such as TikTok, which falsely claimed that the heavily guarded border was open.

Unverified reports about the provision of accommodation in Ceuta and the possibility of free movement to the Spanish mainland also spread rapidly.

The European Union is responding with a plan to monitor popular digital platforms more closely in order to be better prepared for similar events in the future. Following an emergency meeting of member states, officials stated that the bloc plans to develop early-warning systems, including monitoring of social media, to assess risks more accurately.
