Journalist Accused of Anti-Semitism over Ceuta Post

An article by German journalist Georg Restle on the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has prompted a complaint alleging anti-Semitism.

Restle, who works for the regional public broadcaster WDR, subsequently admitted that publishing the controversial quote without commentary was a mistake, according to DPA.

The journalist shared an article from the American magazine The Nation on the social media platform X and included an excerpt from it. The article claimed that the events in Ceuta are neither a genuine humanitarian crisis nor part of an anti-colonial struggle, but rather an effort by the increasingly powerful US-Israeli-Moroccan alliance to weaken a progressive European government, divide Europe and undermine international law.

Felix Schotland, a member of the leadership of the Jewish community in Cologne and also a member of the WDR Broadcasting Council, reacted to the post. He wrote to the station's management that such statements could seriously damage confidence in journalistic independence and the credibility of WDR. In particular, he criticized the impression that geopolitical events are controlled by a “conspiratorial network”.

Restle distanced himself from this interpretation. He emphasized that the quote was not his own statement. At the same time, he acknowledged that he should not have published it without explanation and rejected accusations of spreading anti-Semitism.

WDR described the publication of the quote without commentary as a mistake but stated that it has no doubts about Restle's personal integrity.
