Colombia Quake Death Toll Reaches 224

Rescue workers in western Colombia are continuing an intensive search for people trapped under the rubble following a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake. According to estimates by local authorities on Tuesday, the disaster has claimed at least 224 lives, though the final toll may still rise.

The earthquake, the strongest to hit the country in decades, struck on Monday, primarily affecting Colombia’s western regions. It damaged residential buildings, schools, healthcare facilities and transportation infrastructure. Thousands of people have been reported missing as rescue teams continue searching collapsed buildings.

The situation is particularly dire in cities including Cali and Pereira. Rescue workers and volunteers are searching through devastated residential neighborhoods for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

Damage to infrastructure has forced the closure of airports and roads, while several areas remain without electricity, water or telephone service. Foreign aid is already on its way to Colombia. The United States has allocated $15.5m in assistance.
