German States Ease Truck Bans as Rivers Run Low

A growing number of German states are temporarily easing truck driving restrictions due to low river levels, with exemptions already in effect or announced in nine states.

Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg are the latest to introduce exemptions. Similar measures are set to take effect this coming weekend in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Lower Saxony had already introduced exemptions.

The measures come amid persistently low water levels, particularly on the Rhine and other major waterways. Ships are therefore unable to carry their usual loads, forcing some cargo onto roads. German authorities hope the exemptions will facilitate alternative road transport and reduce the risk of supply chain disruptions.

However, the changes do not amount to a nationwide suspension of Sunday and public holiday driving restrictions for trucks. Individual states determine their duration and scope.

In Hamburg, the exemption is in effect from 10 August to 31 August, while in Schleswig-Holstein it lasts until the end of the month. In Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, the exemptions may remain in effect until 30 September. Transport companies must therefore check the rules in each state when planning routes that cross state borders.
