Russian Civilian Deaths Rise Sharply

Civilian casualties in Russia rose significantly during the first seven months of 2026. According to data compiled by the Conflict Intelligence Team, at least 327 people were killed in Russia in shelling, drone attacks and airstrikes outside occupied areas, compared with 145 during the same period last year.

The number of people injured in such attacks also rose sharply to 2,366, more than double last year’s figure. The increase comes as Ukrainian forces make greater use of drones and missiles to strike targets across a wider area of Russia.

The toll remains far higher in Ukraine. Conflict Intelligence Team data showed that 1,695 civilians were killed in parts of Ukraine not controlled by Russia during the first seven months of this year, 25% more than during the same period in 2025. Another 12,515 were injured.

Nearly 70% of civilian deaths from aerial attacks in the war this year occurred in Ukrainian-controlled territory, according to the group.
