Moldova Targeted by Large-Scale Russian Operation

According to Western intelligence officials, Russia has launched a large-scale operation aimed at influencing political developments in Moldova, The New York Times reports.

The operation allegedly involved disinformation, cyberattacks, vote-buying, the involvement of Orthodox priests and the training of individuals prepared to stir up unrest. Moscow denies the allegations of influencing Moldova.

In 2025, a training camp was established in Serbia where participants, mostly Moldovans, trained in the use of weapons and in breaking through police cordons. According to Moldovan authorities, additional training sessions took place near Moscow and in Bosnia. Some reportedly involved the manufacture of incendiary devices and explosives, as well as the use of drones.

Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, who lives in Russia, is said to have played a significant role as well. Documents reviewed by The New York Times reveal an extensive network of activists tasked with spreading anti-government content and opposing President Maia Sandu and the country's rapprochement with the EU.

Ahead of the parliamentary elections in September 2025, Moldovan authorities carried out hundreds of raids, and Western allies helped fend off cyberattacks. Serious violence was ultimately prevented, and Sandu's PAS party won more than half of the votes.
