Twelve Killed in Polish Bus Crash in Hungary

Twelve people died and at least 10 were injured after a Polish bus overturned on a highway in eastern Hungary overnight, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Facebook Sunday morning.

Early Sunday morning, the bus overturned after veering into a ditch near the town of Mezokeresztes in eastern Hungary, police said.

The state news agency MTI reported that the bus was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers.

"A Polish-registered bus travelling on the M3 motorway towards Nyiregyhaza ... veered off the straight stretch of road into a ditch and overturned. Preliminary information suggests the driver likely fell asleep", police said on their website.

Twelve people were killed in the accident and several others were injured, police said, adding that the bus driver was taken into custody. The injured were transported to hospital.
