Morocco Detains Nearly 300 Migrants near Ceuta

On Saturday, Moroccan security forces intervened in a mountainous area near the town of Fnideq and dispersed hundreds of migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, who were attempting to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Authorities detained 294 people during the operation, including 46 Moroccans, according to Euronews.

The operation required the deployment of ground patrols, drones and Moroccan Royal Navy speedboats, which stepped up surveillance both on land and at sea.

It took place just two weeks after a mass attempt in late July, during which thousands of people crossed into Ceuta. According to humanitarian organizations, that crossing claimed at least 141 lives. Police are now maintaining strict checkpoints on access roads from the cities of Tetouan and Tangier to prevent further organized crossings of the kind repeatedly called for in social media posts.
