Germany Steps Up Removal of Syrian Protected Status

Germany has significantly accelerated the process of revoking refugee status for Syrian nationals. In the first half of this year, 23.2% of the 8,320 reviews conducted resulted in the revocation or cancellation of protection, according to the DPA news agency.

This represents a sharp increase compared with previous years, when only 3.7% of Syrians reviewed lost their protected status in 2025 and just 3.1% in 2024.

Revocation typically occurs when the original grounds for granting protection no longer exist and the situation in the country has changed. In exceptional cases, it may also occur if false statements are discovered during the asylum process. Although hundreds of thousands of Syrians have returned home since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, security risks persist in some areas.

While the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) initially focused primarily on convicted criminals or individuals who had returned to Syria on their own, it has been gradually expanding this procedure since mid-June. The withdrawal of protection now also applies to individuals with long-pending asylum cases or those who are not vulnerable and are able to support themselves in their home country.
