Man Has 3.1kg Bladder Stone Removed
A 55-year-old patient at a hospital in Trincomalee had a 3.1kg bladder stone removed. Doctors believe it is the largest such stone ever surgically removed.
The man was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. During his treatment, medical staff noticed that he was having difficulty urinating, and subsequent examinations revealed stones in his bladder. The largest of these measured approximately 17cm, was about the size of an ostrich egg and weighed about as much as a full-term baby.
“According to available records, this is the largest bladder stone ever documented and surgically removed”, Dr. Prahalathan Balakrishnan, who led the procedure, told the BBC. According to him, the patient is in very good health.
Balakrishnan estimates that the stone may have been in the patient’s body for five to 10 years. The previous Guinness World Record came from Brazil, where in 2003 a stone weighing 1.9kg and measuring 17.9cm in length was removed from a patient.
