Berlin, Paris Condemn Ben Gvir over Nightly Killings Call
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned remarks by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who said the military should carry out targeted killings of 30 to 40 people in the Gaza Strip every night.
"The chancellor strongly condemns the inhumane appeals made by Minister (Itamar) Ben Gvir, which violate international law", German government spokesperson Sebastian Hille said.
Ben Gvir made the remarks in an interview with Rom Braslavski, a former hostage of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the comments as "intolerable and inhumane". German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil said on Tuesday that sanctions are being discussed at the European level.
Berlin also condemned Israeli plans to build more than 1,000 housing units in the E1 area of the West Bank. According to the German government, such steps would lead toward annexation and jeopardize prospects for a two-state solution.
