A car deliberately plowed into a group of pedestrians outside the train station in the northern French city of Caen on Wednesday evening, killing one person and injuring ten others, local authorities said.

David Claviere, prefect of the Calvados department, said seven of the injured were in critical condition. Three others were seriously injured but were not in critical condition.

Police later arrested the driver. According to Claviere, he was born in Russia and was not previously known to French intelligence services.

The motive remains unclear. Police are investigating the incident and reviewing security camera footage.
