Taking statins, medications used to lower cholesterol, may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 15%. The findings were reported at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology by researchers who followed more than 132,000 people in Denmark for 15 years. According to The Guardian, the findings were also published in the journal Lancet Regional Health Europe.

According to research by scientist Tummas Ternhamar, early initiation of statin therapy had a more significant preventive effect than delayed initiation, which reduced the risk by 10%. High LDL cholesterol hardens and narrows the vascular system, restricting blood flow to the brain and damaging its tissue.

Experts emphasize that although this is an observational study primarily confirming an association, the findings fit into a broader approach to dementia prevention.

Early cholesterol management starting in middle age, along with exercise and a healthy diet, is therefore a key step toward protecting both cardiovascular and brain health.
