Polish special forces are taking part in a new US Army Green Beret exercise in Germany that simulates infiltrating behind enemy lines and carrying out a drone strike.

The training in Hohenfels, Bavaria, draws on lessons from Ukraine’s war against Russia, according to the AP.

Poland is the first NATO ally to take part in the exercise, with other member states also expected to show interest.

The scenario requires Polish troops to slip past a US Army airborne infantry unit and then travel about 100 km through German countryside, villages and a city to another training area in Grafenwöhr, where they are expected to destroy a simulated target. Civilians are largely unaware of the exercise, while US Army drones are also used to hunt for the soldiers.

The exercise comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO. The Wall Street Journal reported that CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently traveled to Moscow to warn Russia against attacking NATO countries, although Reuters later reported that such concerns may not have been the main focus of the visit.

Germany is also investigating an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport involving an explosive-laden drone. Authorities have not yet publicly identified who was responsible.
