US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to the White House after months of tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to Reuters. It remains unclear whether the White House has accepted it.

Driscoll, considered close to Vice President JD Vance, pushed to modernize the Army and speed up the acquisition of cheaper weapons while criticizing major defense contractors.

Tensions intensified after Hegseth fired Army Chief of Staff Randy George in April, a move that caught Driscoll off guard. Hegseth later pushed out the head of US Army forces in Europe and personally blocked promotions for senior Army officials.

Driscoll raised concerns that Hegseth’s actions were hampering Army transformation and readiness. His deputy, Dave Fitzgerald, who focused on military innovation, is also expected to resign.

Driscoll, who took up the Army’s top civilian post in February 2025, had also been given an unusual diplomatic role by President Donald Trump in talks with Moscow and Kyiv aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
