As Poland builds Europe’s largest land army, it is increasingly turning to domestic and Central European defense companies to reduce reliance on distant suppliers that may be unable to quickly ramp up deliveries in a conflict.

Polish defense procurement from domestic companies, including joint ventures with other Central European firms, has nearly quadrupled since 2022, reaching approximately €7bn ($8.15bn) last year, according to data analyzed by Reuters.

Poland is expected to spend around €53bn ($61.45bn) on core defense expenditure this year, equivalent to about 4.7% of GDP. US-made systems such as Patriot missile batteries, Abrams tanks and F-35 fighter jets remain important, but expanding domestic and regional production of ammunition, drones and other frequently used equipment has become a priority.

The shift is also creating opportunities for Central European companies. Czech-based CSG has signed several agreements in recent months to expand production in Poland, including ammunition, drones, missiles and armored vehicles. Polish officials are also discussing expanded industrial cooperation with Slovakia and Hungary.
