Spanish National Police intervened in the Loma Colmenar area of Ceuta on Monday morning after hundreds of migrants tried to force their way into a temporary holding area, according to the Demócrata website. Officers used batons and fired warning shots as the attempt led to a stampede.

The incident followed the transfer of migrants from Trampolín Beach to the facility, which reached capacity after around 400 people were admitted. Hundreds more remained outside, many having spent the night in a makeshift camp.

The concentration of people near residential areas and Ceuta University Hospital led to tensions with local residents and prompted police to close an access road. Officers set up checkpoints and began gradually dispersing the crowd.

Police presence around Loma Colmenar has been reinforced to prevent further gatherings and protect migrants, residents and workers.
