Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he will give up his seat in Parliament because, in his view, it is the “right time” to leave the House of Commons. In July, after losing support within the Labour Party for his roles as prime minister and party leader, he was replaced by Andy Burnham.

Starmer’s decision will trigger a special election in the London constituency of Holborn and St. Pancras, which he represented for 11 years. Green Party leader Zack Polanski is also considering running.

In the May local elections in Camden, Labour lost 17 seats, while the Greens gained ten.

After leaving Parliament, Starmer plans to work in the field of international relations, including defense, security, trade, and technology. He also plans to continue the fight against violence against women and girls.

He led Labour to a decisive election victory in 2024. After stepping down as prime minister, he originally promised to remain a member of Parliament until the next general election, but he has now changed his mind. The Conservatives have therefore accused him of yet another U-turn.
