Mistrial Declared in Lindsay Clancy Case

A Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial in the case of Lindsay Clancy after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict following more than 36 hours of deliberations over six and a half days, according to the BBC.

Clancy does not dispute that she killed her three children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan – in January 2023.

The trial centered on Clancy’s mental state at the time of the killings and whether she was criminally responsible. As deliberations continued, her defense sought to have one juror removed, arguing that the juror was not following the legal standard for reasonable doubt. Judge William Sullivan rejected the request.

The defense then appealed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the trial from ending in a mistrial. Sullivan subsequently dismissed the jury and declared a mistrial, leaving the case without a verdict.

Prosecutors can now seek a new trial, reach a plea agreement with the defense or drop the charges.
