US Embassy Warns of Diseases in Cuba

The US Embassy in Havana has issued a health advisory for people traveling to and living in Cuba due to a marked rise in intestinal illnesses and diarrhea. According to the embassy, this is linked to the deteriorating condition of the water and energy infrastructure, which affects both the water supply and the storage and refrigeration of food.

The warning comes nine months after President Donald Trump's administration imposed a blockade on fuel supplies to the communist-ruled island. According to Reuters, the blockade has contributed to a sharp increase in power outages and made it difficult to keep food refrigerated and maintain hygiene in homes and businesses.

UN human rights experts have described the US fuel blockade as a violation of international law. In August, they also highlighted the growing risk of disease outbreaks and warned of a deepening humanitarian crisis.

For months, Cubans have complained of illnesses accompanied by diarrhea, fevers and body aches. Meanwhile, power outages commonly last for days.

The US Embassy has recommended exercising increased caution with perishable foods and avoiding food left at room temperature for extended periods.
