Ceasefire to Restore Power at Zaporizhzhia Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) brokered a local ceasefire intended to allow for the repair of power lines and the restoration of external power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The ceasefire has already taken effect.

The plant, which is under Russian control but located on Ukrainian territory, has been without external power since 20 August and has been relying on emergency diesel generators to cool its key safety systems.

According to the IAEA, the plant's diesel fuel reserves are dwindling, and it faces a complete power outage within days unless external power is restored or additional diesel fuel is delivered to the site.

According to the agency, Ukrainian technicians will begin repairs on the power lines as early as Saturday, once the area has been cleared of mines.
