Man Rescued Alive 10 Days After Nepal Glacier Collapse

On Saturday, rescue workers in Nepal pulled a Chinese citizen named Luhaitao alive from a 225-m-long tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydroelectric power plant, 10 days after a glacier collapsed in the upper reaches of the river on 26 August.

A mass of ice, rocks and mud subsequently swept through the Himalayan valley. The disaster claimed more than 1,300 lives, and over 5,600 people are still missing.

On Friday, rescuers had already managed to free two people from another tunnel at the nearby Upper Trishuli 3A power plant on the same river.

According to rescuers' estimates, at least 900 people may have been trapped in the tunnels connected to six hydroelectric power plants following the glacier collapse.

Footage released by the Nepalese army shows Luhaitao receiving emergency medical care in the helicopter that transported him to a military hospital. The man appeared exhausted and disoriented, with dried mud and dust on his clothes and skin.
