Trump Is Developing a Postwar Strategy for the Middle East

The Trump administration is working on a postwar strategy for the Middle East that focuses on containing Iran regionally and expanding the normalization of relations between Israel and its neighbors, according to Axios. The plan is intended to guide the US approach following the end of the war with Iran and during the final two years of Trump's term.

The strategy is still in the early stages of development. Work on it is underway at the highest political and interagency levels, and Trump has held two meetings with high-ranking advisors on the matter in recent weeks.

According to sources, three main elements are under discussion: the creation of a regional coalition of US allies to contain Iran, with Washington as the guarantor; addressing the regional repercussions of the 7 October 2023 attacks through agreements concerning Gaza, Syria and Lebanon; and expanding the Abraham Accords, including the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

The development of the plan is being influenced by the Israeli elections scheduled for 27 October and the November congressional elections in the United States. The Trump administration hopes for cooperation from the new Israeli government, but US officials say Trump intends to push forward with the strategy regardless of the outcome of the Israeli elections.
