Czech PM Babis Warns of “Cold War” in Europe

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said Russia poses a threat and that the Czech Republic is likely a target of Russian cyberattacks, according to Echo24.

According to Babis, the government is monitoring the security situation in Germany, where authorities have attributed espionage and sabotage activity to Russia, including the August drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

Babis said he had convened the National Security Council and that the cabinet had taken measures to ensure Czech citizens have nothing to fear, though he did not disclose details.

The Czech government is coordinating its next steps with its allies and is prepared to support potential restrictions on Russian diplomats if European countries agree on them, Babis added. He also emphasized that Russia invaded Ukraine and is the aggressor.

He described the current situation in Europe as a “cold war”, but also criticized the continuation of the war in Ukraine, saying that, in his view, there is insufficient discussion of ways to achieve peace.
