Ceuta Migrant Influx Faces Criminal Probe

Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered a criminal investigation into the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants in the enclave of Ceuta in July. According to Euronews, the decision is based on a Spanish police report that pointed to the complete tolerance shown by Moroccan security forces.

According to the judge, there are grounds to believe that the alleged criminal activity, committed abroad, seriously undermined Spain’s territorial integrity through the massive influx of people into the country.

The court said the influx constituted a method of hybrid warfare aimed at altering the lives and rights of Spanish citizens in Ceuta. Police findings indicated that the entire process was clearly facilitated by Morocco, as documented in reports by local security forces.

Uniformed personnel did not attempt to stop the influx and, in some cases, allegedly even actively provided guidance on how to cross the border.

The Spanish government said there was no compelling evidence of Rabat’s direct responsibility for the entry of more than 70,000 migrants into the enclave in July. Moroccan authorities have not officially commented on the report.
