Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Resigns amid Corruption Scandal

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko submitted his resignation to President Volodymyr Zelensky and parliament, calling the move political and saying he did not want his office to become a tool in political struggles.

Kravchenko denies involvement in an alleged criminal organization accused of protecting fraudulent call centers and laundering millions of hryvnias. Earlier on Monday, he had insisted he had no plans to resign.

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) say the group was led by a senior official at the Prosecutor General’s Office and received regular bribes in exchange for allowing fraudulent call centers to operate. NABU detained Serhii Kropyva, a deputy head of the office’s international cooperation department. A court remanded him in custody and set bail at Hr 120m ($2.7m).

NABU recordings also refer to an alleged “boss” whose details match Kravchenko’s background, although he has not been publicly identified as a suspect. Kravchenko denied any involvement after his office was searched.
