Iceland Summons US Ambassador over Trump Map

Iceland summoned US Ambassador Billy Long on Monday after President Donald Trump posted an image on Truth Social showing the island and several other countries covered by the US flag, local broadcaster RÚV reported.

The map showed the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean covered by the flag, with the entire landmass labeled “United States of America”.

Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir called in Long, who formally took up his post only last month, and made clear that Iceland considered the post completely inappropriate. US authorities did not immediately comment.

Trump’s repeated assertions that Washington must acquire Greenland have caused tensions between the United States and Denmark in recent years. Both are founding members of NATO.

The post appeared hours after the European Commission announced a €200m ($232.5m) investment in Greenland during a visit by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that Greenland’s government and people had repeatedly rejected becoming part of the United States.
