Trump Offers $5,000 Dividend Ahead of Midterms
US President Donald Trump announced at the Republican National Convention in Dallas on Wednesday that he would pay every American adult a $5,000 “Trump dividend” if his party retains control of Congress after the November midterm elections. The proposal would cost roughly $1.35tn.
Trump made the announcement as polls show growing voter dissatisfaction over the cost of living and the ongoing war with Iran.
In a speech lasting one hour and 45 minutes, Trump defended military action against Tehran as necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and promised oil prices would fall after a US victory.
The convention, informally dubbed “Trumpapalooza”, also highlighted divisions within the Republican Party. Some candidates in tight races skipped the event amid concerns that close ties to Trump could hurt their chances, while many speakers focused primarily on attacking Democrats.
The event also featured a surprise video appearance by Democratic Senator John Fetterman, who expressed support for his Republican colleague Dave McCormick, highlighting ideological divisions within the Democratic Party.
