Zelensky: Canada Pledges Major Air Defense Package

Canada will provide Ukraine with a significant package of air defense equipment and support for its energy sector. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on Thursday ahead of talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Zelensky did not disclose details about the nature of the aid or the measures for the energy sector. He emphasized, however, that this is crucial support. Kyiv is running critically low on US-made Patriot missiles capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles, just as Moscow is intensifying its attacks.

Upon his arrival in Canada, Zelensky stated that the main topics of his visit would be strengthening Ukraine's air defense and preparing the country for winter.

Carney pledged further assistance to Kyiv in repelling Russian attacks. Ottawa will also support Ukraine's efforts to join NATO and the EU.

Canada is among Ukraine's strongest supporters. Since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Canada has pledged a total of more than C$25.5bn ($18.5bn) in aid, of which C$8.5bn ($6.2bn) is military support.
