Obamacare Customers to Receive $500 Refunds

The White House announced that nearly one million Americans insured through Obamacare will receive $500 refunds for excess fees charged through the federal health insurance marketplace. The Trump administration will begin mailing the checks in October.

The refunds will go to residents of 30 states who purchased insurance through HealthCare.gov and do not receive premium subsidies. Obamacare plans, established under former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, are subsidized based on income.

The White House claims that Obamacare exchange user fees charged under the Biden administration were passed on to customers through higher premiums. President Donald Trump said the refunds would, in many cases, cover the entire increase in insurance costs and return money that, he claims, was unfairly taken from consumers.

Healthcare costs for subsidized plans rose after Congress allowed COVID-19-era tax credits to expire.

Trump has also proposed paying every American adult $5,000 as a “Trump dividend” if Republicans win the November election. His administration has proposed new rules for 2027 that would allow insurers to offer long-term catastrophic health plans with low premiums but significantly higher out-of-pocket costs for patients.
