Vance Tests His Appeal as a Possible Trump Successor

US Vice President JD Vance took center stage at the Republican convention in Dallas in an appearance widely seen as an early test of his prospects as a potential presidential candidate in 2028.

The 42-year-old vice president relied on nationalist rhetoric, criticism of Democrats and issues such as immigration, crime and cultural conflicts. When a protester waved a Mexican flag, Vance responded: “Well, my friend, if you love Mexico so much, get your ass over there.” He then offered to buy the man a plane ticket, drawing loud applause throughout the hall.

Some supporters then chanted “48, 48” – a reference to the possibility that Vance could become the 48th president of the United States. Vance, however, emphasized that Republicans must first focus on winning November’s midterm elections.

Donald Trump has not yet indicated whom he would support in 2028. After the convention, he told reporters that Vance had done “very well”, but stopped short of endorsing a successor. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also frequently mentioned as a possible contender.

At the same time, the atmosphere at the convention made clear that Republican politics remains strongly centered on Trump, with his image dominating the arena throughout the two-day gathering.
