Train Derails in France, Injuring 44

A passenger train carrying approximately 180 passengers derailed near the town of Cléon in Normandy, France, while traveling between Rouen and Caen, injuring 44 people. An 18-year-old woman sustained the most serious injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Emergency services mounted a large-scale response. In total, 130 firefighters and five medical teams worked at the scene, supported by 80 vehicles. A passenger described several jolts that quickly grew stronger, after which windows shattered and ballast from the track began flying into the carriage.

Traffic on the railway line was suspended, and the overhead power lines were disconnected. According to available information, the train driver tested negative for both alcohol and drugs. The exact cause of the derailment is not yet clear. Railway authorities are investigating the case in cooperation with police.
